This is a 10* EAST-COAST TOTAL EXPRESS on the UNDER between the New York Knicks and the Atlanta Hawks.
While we are primarily a situationally based handicapping service, we don't prescribe to any one single methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions, are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.
This particular play is based on a few different factors:
Atlanta motivation: The Hawks have taken two of three from New York this season, holding the Knicks to 40.9 percent shooting in late October and clamping down defensively in the second half of their December victory for a sixth straight win overall in the series. But New York bounced back with a big time 111-97 win on Sunday at Madison Square Garden behind a super-human effort from Arron Afflalo, who poured in a season-high 38 points. Suffice it to say, we expect the home side to clamp down on Afflalo today as they look to take back the upper hand once again in this match-up (note that no other Knick would score more than 16 points in that one).
Home court advantage: Atlanta has won four straight at home; note that the Hawks have seen the total go UNDER the number in six of ten this year following a loss by ten points or more and in nine of 15 vs. teams with losing records.
New York's road struggles: The Knicks have seen the total go UNDER the number in ten of 18 away from friendly confines this season (also in ten of 18 vs. teams with winning records).
The bottom line: Four of these teams last five in the series have flown above the posted number, but we feel that the conditions are now finally right for a much more scrappy affair, with a lot of half court sets on offense. Play on the UNDER.
