This is a 10* TOTAL OF THE MONTH on the OVER between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Vancouver Canucks.
While we are primarily a situationally based handicapping service, we don't prescribe to any one single methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions, are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.
This particular play is based on a few different factors:
Motivation: The Carolina Hurricanes have been playing well defensively, but the team has been abysmal on the offensive end of the ice, but as they look to break a two-game slide, we feel that the conditions are now right for a higher-scoring shootout. Most recently the team is coming off a brutal 1-0 OT loss at Edmonton on Monday and has failed on 12 power-play chances over the last seven games: "I don't think they got our best game, but we got a point and we've got to take that and come out with a better effort against Vancouver," said Carolina forward Eric Staal, who has had a hand in six of Carolina's 13 goals over the last seven, after the loss to the Oilers. "It's a big stretch for our team, a good chunk of hockey games that we want to get points and get wins."
Recent history: The Canucks could care less about Carolina's issues, they'll be looking to continue their recent success vs. the Hurricanes, outscoring them 12-3 while winning the last four. Vancouver has also won all seven match-ups at home since 1999.
Strong and relevant ATS statistics: Note that Carolina has seen the total go OVER the number in seven of 12 this year after scoring one goal or less in its previous contest and in seven of 11 after a non-conference contest, while Vancouver has seen the total sail above the posted number in eight of 14 non-conference games this season and in three of four after playing to three or more consecutive UNDERs.
